The Most Common Self Publishing Question

…What I did was I actually brought on three people to edit it. My niece was willing to go through it as well as another friend and then I hired an editor who was good but also was going to charge something I had in my budget.

Once it was edited, I had to figure out how to get it back onto Amazon. One of my frustrations with my publisher was that they only published the print book to Amazon, so I started researching how to get it elsewhere.

So those were really my top questions finding an editor and figuring out how to publish it to the platforms as well as figuring out how to format correctly.

Some people might be wondering what the cost is for self-publishing, but I knew that I’d take each step as I could pay for it, so cost wasn’t something that I researched before I started.

I think author George Cramer has great point of view because he self-published but used the help of a small press to do it. He published two books with the help of Paula at Russian Hill Press.

And here’s what he had to say about selfpublishing questions.

“I know authors who have done it on their own. I have no idea how they got it all done.

After I delivered my manuscript to Paula, I figured it was all wrapped up—No Way! Here are a few of the questions I had to answer:

  1. Where’s your eBook cover? Depending on your designer, this can take a month or more.
  2. Where’s your book cover information?
    • Blurbs – This can take weeks, even months, to complete
    • Bio
    • Headshot
  3. Do you have an ISBN
  4. Do you have a line editor because it needs more editing?
  5. Font
    • Style
    • Size
  6. Do you have an acknowledgment page – do you want one?
  7. Do you have an about the author page – do you want one?
  8. Who do you want to do the printing?
  9. Have you filed for copyright protection?
  10. The formatting is complete. Do you approve?

These are some of the questions, but not all. Without guidance from Paula, I would never have gotten through the process.

My question is: What would I have done without Russian Hill Press?”

Thanks George.

I think a lot of people are surprised about how much work goes into the publishing process. I’m helping an author self-publish his book right now, and by giving him a list of each of the steps it helped him see the timeline and the work that goes into the process.
