The Inspiration Behind the Association

I spoke to a lot of women during the pandemic. Some had stopped reading thrillers because of the lack of strong female characters. (Anyone else stop reading Clive Cussler?)

It also got me thinking about my own problems trying to publish. An agent told me that no one would read an adventure novel with a main female character. I proved him wrong. My book series  not only won two awards, I've got a great readership who loves those books.

So, I want to help other writers create great female characters that readers love.

Besides, women make up the largest readership! Shouldn't we have great books with women that represent us?

Let's Help Each Other and Get Writing

Through our online chats, reviews, and write-ins we'll help each other find that creativity. We're also partnering with Plot Duckies, publisher and writing event company, to bring you virtual short storyathons, which will give you more of the creative inspiration you're looking for and relieve the isolation and hopelessness as well as an opportunity to set aside time to write.

The Short Storyathons have also been a springboard for writers to get on the Amazon best selling list and be top authors in their genre.

We also focus on writers bringing strong female characters to the thriller genre - from Sci-Fi to Spy and female representation across ethnicities.

Your Facilitator

Sonja Dewing, CEO of Women's Thriller Writers Association

I'm Sonja Dewing. Over twenty years ago I stopped writing for more than a year (that's a long story). I thought I had lost my creativity and that I'd never be able to be creative in my writing again. Since then I've successfully published three novels, won three creative writing awards, and helped over forty writers find their own creativity.

You know what else? I had many agents tell me that they didn't want an adventure novel with a female lead. That novel went on to top reviews and people are loving it. Let's show the world that strong female characters belong in all the stories!

What Else You Should Know

You can cancel your subscription at any time.

What if you're not writing a thriller? That's okay, it doesn't need to be a thriller. I just hope that I help a majority of thriller writers because strong female characters across ethnicities are needed in those stories.

What if you're not published? We're here for all stages! We have community members that are just getting started and others who have published several books.

What if you aren't a woman? That's okay, we support anyone who wants to write strong female characters.

You might think that Netflix (or insert the name of any streaming service) just wants you to fail in writing because they keep coming out with the perfect binge worthy stories. But you can do this. Sign up and get inspiration, support, and join our events to write your own story.

I'm Niki Stout, and I'm super thrilled to be a part Women's Thriller Writers Association. Ever since I was a kid, writing had been my 'thing;' my comfort thing, my adventure thing, my creative thing. It's always been a part of me, but I'd set it down for awhile. I lost my focus and passion.

Back in October of 2020, I decided to jump in and participate in the 'Short Storyathon.' My first published short story was born; Jane. And now, I've got my spark back and I'm ready to write.

I have become a bestselling author thanks to Sonja Dewing and the Women's Thriller Writers Association. I'm thrilled!
